Dear Neighbor,
I hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving week surrounded by friends & family.
I am immensely grateful for the support of our constituents in Onslow County. It is an honor to serve as your state senator, and I sincerely appreciate your continued trust.
In this newsletter, you'll find key highlights of our recent work at the General Assembly — including the latest Hurricane Helene relief package.
As always, feel free to contact my office if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback to share.
At your service,
Michael Lazzara
North Carolina Senator
VETO OVERRIDE: House Bill 10
Last week, the NC Senate overrode the Governor’s veto of House Bill 10, making it law. The bill enhances community safety and puts ends ‘sanctuary cities’ by requiring sheriffs to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
This important legislation also gives parents the ability to choose the educational environment that best suits the needs of their children — fully funding the state’s Opportunity Scholarship program.
3rd Round of Relief for Western NC
Last week, the Senate passed Senate Bill 382, delivering a critical $252 million to help Western North Carolina rebuild and recover. Combined with previous appropriations, the state’s total commitment to Helene relief now stands at an historic $1.1 billion.
This funding will go toward addressing housing, infrastructure, and other pressing needs for families still struggling after the storm. At the same time, the bill strengthens accountability measures to ensure funds are spent wisely and transparently.
We’re standing with Western North Carolina and will continue to work tirelessly until these communities are fully restored.
New Senate Leadership Team
The Senate Republican Caucus has elected a stellar leadership team to guide us through the next biennium. With Sen. Phil Berger continuing as Senate President Pro Tempore — supported by Sen. Paul Newton as Majority Leader, and other outstanding leaders like Sen. Ralph Hise, Sen. Amy Galey, Sen. Todd Johnson, and Sen. Carl Ford — the NC Senate is in good hands.
This team’s experience and dedication will help us advance commonsense policies that make North Carolina the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Congratulations to these leaders!
Legislator of the Year Award
I am truly humbled to receive the Legislator of the Year Keystone Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC).
This recognition is a testament to the incredible work we’ve done together to strengthen our state’s infrastructure, foster innovation, and support the engineering professionals who are building a brighter future for North Carolina.
