The Onslow Observer: Helene Relief, Constitutional Amendments, & More...

Dear Neighbor,

With the Christmas season upon us, I want to take a moment to send my warmest wishes to you and your family. This is a season of reflection, gratitude, and celebration, and I am reminded of how fortunate I am to represent the wonderful people of Onslow County. Thank you for the trust and support you’ve placed in me — it is a privilege to serve as your State Senator.

As we close out this year, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and am energized for the opportunities that rest ahead. In this newsletter, you’ll find updates on our work in Raleigh and how we’re tackling the issues that matter most to you, including key relief efforts and a few constitutional initiatives.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office if there’s anything I can do for you. May this season bring you peace, joy, and cherished moments with loved ones.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

At your service,

Michael Lazzara

North Carolina Senator

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

This month, the NC Senate delivered on our promises of common sense leadership by advancing three important constitutional measures:

🪪 Voter ID for All (State) – Strengthening the integrity of our elections by requiring photo ID for every voter, whether in person or by mail.

💰 Income Tax Cap (State) – Cutting the maximum income tax rate from 7% to 5%, so hardworking individuals and families keep more of what they earn.

🇺🇸 Congressional Term Limits (Federal) – Calling for a U.S. Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Congress, ending career politics and restoring accountability to Washington.

North Carolinians deserve leaders who prioritize your interests — secure elections, responsible budgeting, and a government that serves the people rather than itself. I’m proud to fight for these critical reforms and will continue defending the values that make North Carolina strong.

VETO OVERRIDE: SENATE BILL 382

By overriding Governor Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 382, the Senate has delivered critical aid to those impacted by Hurricane Helene, raising the state's total relief fund to $1.1 billion. This legislation, now law, delivers real solutions for today and safeguards for tomorrow.

APPLICATIONS OPEN: YOUTH LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

Attention NC students & parents! 📢 The Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) is back for 2025, offering high school students a unique chance to experience the legislative process firsthand.

From March 7-9, 2025, participants will gather in Raleigh to draft, debate, and vote on mock bills, gaining valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, and public speaking.

This is an incredible opportunity for young leaders to learn how our state government works while building confidence and friendships along the way.

Applications are open now through January 16, 2025 — don’t wait! Encourage the future leaders in your life to apply at www.ncleg.gov/YLA.
